Can CBD oil help with sleep disorders?

More than a third of American adults are affected by sleep disorder symptoms regularly according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

There are roughly 80 different types of sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, and Restless legs syndrome.

These conditions interrupt your natural sleep cycle and can cause daytime sleepiness and other health symptoms.

The common treatment for these sleep-related symptoms is sedation from potentially dangerous medication.

Throughout the years I tried different methods and medications to get rid of free-floating anxiety that keep me awake at night.

Overdosing even just by a small amount with sleeping aid medicine like melatonin, Benadryl or Ambien can cause serious daytime alertness problems.

Multiple studies show that CBD can improve mental alertness.

Can taking CBD keep me awake?

There are multiple answers to the question because of the complexity of how CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system.

In short, depending on the CBD delivery system, the dose amount, cannabis oil type, and industrial. It can be used to support mental alertness or as a bedtime supplement.

In this article, we’ll discuss if CBD is an effective natural alternative remedy to help people get a good night’s rest.

What happens when you are sleep-deprived?

Not getting enough quality sleep can lead to serious side effects.

Nearly 100 million people in the United States experience sleep disorder symptoms.

Sleep deprivation greatly affects cognitive function and leads to other symptoms like learning disabilities, impaired memory, mood swings, and depression.

These side effects can be extremely hazardous in everyday life because it negatively affects reaction time and the decision-making ability.

Furthermore, sleep-deprived people are at higher risk of developing other health problems like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Does CBD Oil Help You Sleep (Insomnia)?

Insomnia can be caused by multiple reasons so there is not an on key fits all.

To know if CBD oil can help alleviate sleep disorders, we need to understand more about the symptoms and causes of insomnia.

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder and is characterized by:

  • Difficulty falling and staying asleep at night.
  • Waking up during the night
  • Day time sleepiness and feeling tired
  • Loss of critical thinking (mental fog)

What Causes Insomnia?

The most common causes of insomnia include psychological and physical symptoms like:

  • Anxiety, depression, and mental health disorders like PTSD.
  • Conditions such as chronic pain or restless leg syndrome.
  • Medications or stimulates like caffeine.
  • External factors like noisy background or sleeping arrangement discomfort.

Does CBD help with sleep disorder symptoms?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-intoxication compound found in both Hemp and marijuana plants that does not make you high.

In recent years CBD oil has become increasingly popular because of its potential to treat common health problems like pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep.

Studies indicate that depending on the dosage, CBD may have different effects on our bodies. Low dosage doses may increase brain alertness while higher dosages can make you relaxed and ready for sleep.

Research suggests that CBD may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety. But more importantly, help reduce chronic pain.

Reliving one or both symptoms could help a person to fall asleep easier and stay asleep.

It is common in people suffering from insomnia to have high levels of cortisol (stress hormone) before bedtime, which is linked to awakings during sleep.

A recent study of 72 people with primary symptoms of anxiety or bad sleep patterns.

79 percent of the group had reported an anxiety reduction for the duration of the study.

The study concluded that CBD holds significant potential to treat anxiety-related disorders and may help with sleep disorders by lowering anxiety. However, more clinical trials are needed.

How to Use Cannabidiol (CBD) to Help Sleep

Apart from CBD, there are few options for people that are not interested in using intoxicating drugs to help against sleep disorder symptoms.

CBD in high doses has proven to reduce anxiety and relax you enough to get sleepy.

Understand your cannabis options

While marijuana (cannabis) is still illegal in most states, the passing of the Farm Bill in 2018 makes hemp (cannabis) legal in the entire united states.

It is safe to say that hemp is legal in most parts of the world, because of the low trace amount (0.3 percent) of the illegal substance (THC) it contains.

The low THC amount decreases the probability that hemp cannabis will be abused and cause drug dependence within the population.

That being said, using marijuana cannabis is more effective when treating particular sleep disorder symptoms because of the sedative effect of THC.

But if you are new to cannabis and want to explore if CBD can help mitigate your sleep disorder symptoms, I recommend starting with Hemp-derived CBD because it is non-intoxicating, whereas marijuana-divided CBD is.

Identify the cause of your sleep issues

People experience sleep problems for different reasons. To understand which CBD product can help treat your sleep issue, you need to first look at your sleep patterns.

This is only a guideline. CBD is considered a safe substance but it is recommended to get a doctor’s prescription to use cannabis as a medication.

Do you struggle to fall asleep?

Some people find it difficult to fall asleep at bedtime because of free-floating thoughts.

These individuals may want to try a concentrated dose of Marijuana CBD or Hemp CBD with a fast delivery system like vaping.

Vaping CBD oil releases the entire dose directly into the bloodstream within 10 minutes. As a result, vaping CBD is the most potent delivery system.

The downside of this method is that it is short-lasting and will be out of your system within a couple of hours.

This method is great if you don’t need sleeping aid once you fall asleep.

Do you struggle to stay asleep?

If you have problems with sleep quality, tincture drops or edibles are the best options.

Both forms help keep you asleep for longer because the CBD is released into the bloodstream in smaller quantities but over an extended period.

While you may not fall asleep instantly, your quality of sleep may improve.

Tincture oil drops are placed under the tongue to absorb for a minute.

CBD edibles are a good alternative, especially if you can not stomach the oil taste.

Besides, edibles are more fun because it comes in many delicious temptations like gummies and cake.

Buy from a trusted seller

Because CBD is not regulated by the FDA you’ll find plenty of low-quality products.

Some sellers try to mislead consumers by substituting CBD oil with hemp seed oil. These two oils do not have the same health benefits.

A recent study found that out of 90 random CBD products tested, 30 percent are inaccurately labeled.

Out of this 30 percent, a total of 40 percent contains more CBD than displayed on the label.

The same study found that 10 percent of the 90 random products tested positive for heavy metal toxicity.

Heavy metal toxicity can be caused either by using a polluted water source to grow cannabis or from pesticides.

Products made from cannabis grown in places with stricter agricultural rules like the United States reduces the risk of harmful (sometimes illegal) pesticide use.

Takeaway: What does the research say?

The research is unclear whether CBD patients sleep better because of pain relief or the relaxing sensation.

However, the evidence suggests that CBD can help mitigate chronic pain and anxiety. As a result, CBD users sleep better.

The research is consistent with my personal experience after being in a horrific accident.

During my recovery, I replace my opioids with marijuana for fear of opioids dependence after a consistent 12month use.

Cannabis did not take away the pain as I initially thought it would but it take off the edge from pain and make me more comfortable to dose off.
